What Is Gender Dysphoria?
Gender Dysphoria is a persistent, strongly experienced sense of sadness and body dissatisfaction which manifests in the feelings of not being recognized as the gender in which one identifies. For example a 4-year-old biological boy may experience confusion and may persist in identifying himself as a girl. He will also insist that he plays with girl toys or with other girls and overall wishes to be recognized as a young girl.
One may experience gender dysphoria from toddlerhood, while others will not realize their dysphoria until puberty or, in some rare cases, later in life. This Dysphoria tends to last until the individual has period of identification and remedy, which includes clarification of one’s gender to the self and others. All professional treatments for this medical condition include the International Standards of Care (formerly know as the Harry Benjamin Standards of Care).
